Manicure Warmers- Why They are Handy

Posted under manicures by Vivienne on Wednesday 28 May 2008

Why would you need a warmer in order to give a manicure? Well, that’s a very good question. The warmer isn’t really for the manicure, and it’s not really used in an everyday basic manicure. A manicure warmer is saved for the purpose of giving a very special type of manicure. This special type of manicure is a spa manicure. A spa manicure, is a little pricier than its basic counterpart, but it is worth the splurge every once in a while.

The manicure warmer is actually used to warm wax used to give a spa manicure. The warmer will heat and melt a paraffin wax. The wax is then smothered onto the hands of the lucky recipient. The wax acts as a moisturizer. It replaces essential oils and moisture that we loose through every day life, especially through hand washing. The wax will help to smooth rough hands and temporarily reduce fine lines leaving hands looking younger and softer. With regular spa manicures hands will continue to look younger, due to the softening of the skin.

Once the wax has been applied the client is left to relax and wait for the wax to harden. The wax doesn’t actually harden into a complete solid form. It’s not like the wax will be as hard as a crayon or a candle. It’s also a very thin layer of wax, so it will come off with a gentle rubbing motion. Once the wax has been heated and applied the manicure warmer is no longer needed. There are many different types of manicure warmers. Some warmers come with disposable cups that allow for ease of clean up, while others have to be emptied and cleaned daily. For anyone who has ever had to clean up dried candle wax, you know that this can be an unpleasant task to say the least.

Some manicure warmers also can be used for other beauty shop purposes. For example, some salons may use their manicure warmer to warm the wax used for waxing procedures, like leg and eyebrow waxing. These waxes are usually stickier and heated to a higher temperature than the wax used for a spa manicure or pedicure.

These manicure warmers can be used to give spa pedicures as well as manicures. Why should hands have all of the fun? A spa pedicure can be a great treat for dry and rough or cracked feet. I know that I treated myself to a spa pedicure after I ran the marathon, and it was just what the doctor should have ordered. My feet felt rested, refreshed and most importantly moisturized. It is important for distance runners to take good care of their feet. I have seen some pretty ugly toes after marathon training. I wouldn’t say that I get regular pedicures, but the few that I have gotten have helped to keep my toes looking good.

So that being said, I am thankful for the invention of manicure warmers. Without them, we wouldn’t have the greatest hand pampering known as the spa manicure.

Dieting with Slim Fast

Posted under Diets by Vivienne on Wednesday 21 May 2008

Slim Fast is another great diet aid that has been around for quite a while. From it’s origins as a thick and gritty powder designed to help you stave off hunger to it’s current incarnation as a line of weight loss products and meal bar supplements we have seen some amazing transitions and longevity in this particular product.

Slim Fast is becoming famous for the new flavors they have introduced and their steady stream of testimonials from those who have met or exceeded their goals by using the Slim Fast system. Using Slim Fast when dieting can assist those with little will power when it comes to chocolate and sweets achieve their weight loss goals by having the higher calorie shakes and snacks throughout the day followed by a sensible meal in the evening and indulging in their craving for sweets throughout the day. It’s a good plan as long as those using it can manage to stick with the plan.

In the past Slim Fast would not have been a product I would have recommended for those needing to lose a large amount of weight. That has changed however in the last year or so as they have introduced a much more aggressive health and wellness plan that is appropriate to those who have more pounds to take off than the simple 20 or so vanity pounds that was typical of the Slim Fast user of the past.

When it comes to dieting, not all plans are one size fits all, nor should they be. It’s good to see that Slim Fast is also adapting to meet the various needs of consumers. Not only does Slim Fast offer consumers shakes and meal replacement or snack bars that are convenient to use even when on the go but they also offer meals that you can prepare as well as healthy convenience meals to replace those evening meals when you are on the run. For those who like options, Slim Fast seems to have more options than ever before.

More than options however, it is good to see that Slim Fast, even after all these years, is still getting results by those who stick with the program. The truth is that the product wouldn’t have been around this long if it wasn’t working for someone along the way. Like many other weight loss plans, Slim Fast has taken to pushing the benefits of an active lifestyle in addition to the need for a healthy diet. There are some that will argue that you are not getting all the nutrients you need from drinking shakes but it could be reasonably argued from reading the label that the average shake contains more vitamins and nutrients than a sad margin of people consume on a daily basis.

Whether your dieting goals are very short term and specific or long term and lifestyle altering, Slim Fast can assist you in reaching those goals. This is a lifestyle adjustment in itself though and you must be prepared for a new way of eating in order for this plan to work for your specific dieting needs. If you haven’t checked out Slim Fast lately and you have made the decision to lose weigh but are uncertain how to go about it, perhaps it’s time you take a second look at the Slim Fast line.

Amber Manicure Heater

Posted under manicures by Vivienne on Wednesday 14 May 2008

For a basic manicure you need some basic supplies like, an emery board or nail file, tweezers, an orange stick, nail polish remover, and last but not least the nail polish itself.

These all seem simple and basic enough, but if you are giving a spa manicure, the whole simplicity thing is out the window.

A spa manicure is not entirely different from a regular manicure in that you will still receive all of the basic cleaning, massaging, shaping and painting, but you will also receive a paraffin wax in addition to the basics. It’s awesome. A spa manicure really is the total luxury in pampering. Because of the wax, you will need a couple more products than are necessary to give a basic manicure. The products are a little pricier, but most clients will be willing to pay the difference in order to experience this extra pampering. If they are not willing to pay the difference every time they get a manicure, it’s guaranteed that this can be used as an enticing bonus for special occasions.

The wax must be melted in order to apply to the client’s hands. The most commonly used heater is the Amber manicure heater. It comes with refill cups for ease of cleaning and additional cups may be purchased separately. There is no need to clean the sticky mess, simply throw the plastic cup away and wipe the surface clean. We all know what a mess wax can make when it dries and hardens.

Once the wax is heated and melted the clients hand is dipped into the wax and then it is spread evenly onto the entire hand. Then a plastic cover is inserted over the hand. This protects the terry cloth mitts that are then put on top of the plastic cover. The next step for you and the client is to wait. Sometimes this quiet relaxation and waiting is the best part of the spa manicure. Once the wax has hardened, it is time to continue with the manicure.

At this point continue with the manicure as you ordinarily would. You can skip the first step of soaking the hands since the wax will have already softened the cuticles. The nails may also be a little softer due to the intense moisture that the wax provides. They should strengthen once they are polished. The wax will leave the hands feeling soft and smooth for days.

Incidentally, you can you the Amber manicure heater to heat wax for a spa pedicure as well. Amber also makes special booties that go on top of the client’s feet during the spa pedicure. They have thought of everything. These little extras like the booties and the disposable wax cups really help to make clean up a lot easier.

Sometimes our feet get so rough and dry that the wax is really the best way to make them smooth again, so a spa pedicure can be just the medicine. I think that you will be pleased with the results.

24 Hour Fitness – A Profile of the Successful Fitness Chain

Posted under Uncategorized by Vivienne on Saturday 10 May 2008

There are many different fitness clubs that a person can go to in order to get in shape. Some of these clubs are single-unit clubs or small chains, while others are veritable giants of the industry. One of the chains that would likely fit into the ‘giant’ category is 24 Hour Fitness. 24 Hour Fitness is a large health club that started as a single health club and has grown into one of the world’s largest privately-held and operated fitness chains in the world.

24 Hour Fitness began in 1983 as a single club. It has grown to a company with over 16,000 employees that has a presence in four countries. 24 Hour Fitness is headquartered in San Ramon, California and currently has around 3 million members. Over the next five years, 24 Hour Fitness plans to expand to have over 1000 locations worldwide.

One reason this club has been so successful is that they offer their customers the ability to use their facilities 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This convenience factor has been a big drive to help them expand their customer base. Due to this fact, many other chains are now expanding their hours of operation to try to meet this convenience factor for their customers.

Through the years, 24 Hour Fitness has gained public fame for accomplishments that are outside of the fitness chain norm. In 2004, 24 Hour Fitness became the sponsor for the U.S. Olympic team and also in 2004 they worked with NBC to develop a television show called “The Biggest Loser”. This show revolved around helping people to use exercise and diet to lose substantial amounts of weight. Contestants competed in teams to lose the most weight overall.

Controversies

24 Hour Fitness has not been lacking in their share of troubles alongside their success. During February of 2005, a lawsuit was filed against them that alleged they were conducting illegal business activities. The specific illegalities cited were that the health club continued to charge members after their contracts expired or were cancelled and that they did not use proper font formatting for their contracts.

Near the end of 2006, 24 Hour Fitness settled the class-action lawsuit. They granted all complainants their choice of either around $30 in cash each or a free 30 day pass to the club.

Currently, 24 Hour Fitness is defending itself against a lawsuit that was filed in 2006. This lawsuit alleges that they continued to take money out of customer’s checking accounts and credit cards after the contract expired and the company was notified that the customer wanted to cancel.

Which Fitness Program Best Fits Your needs?

Posted under fitness by Vivienne on Thursday 8 May 2008

There are many different fitness programs to choose from, once you decide to workout. First you have fitness programs that involve weights, both free weights and fixed weights, such as universal exercise machines. There are other types of fitness programs such as aerobic exercise, which includes Taebo, and step aerobics. You might also like to try some cardio workouts such as running, swimming, or hiking. The thing is that without a set program and schedule it is just working out and not a fitness program. Here are some things you need to do to make a great program that best fits you. First Step: Finding The Right Fitness Program For you The first step in finding the right program for you is realizing what type of physical shape you are in. Once you have determined your own physical abilities, you can then sit down and plan out a fitness program to meet your needs. Second you must determine how much time you have available. Third you must choose which type of fitness program you want to do. Second Step: Planning Your Schedule Now that you know what type of fitness program you want to be involved in, and know the amount of time you have available, you must write down your fitness program schedule. If you fail to write down your fitness program schedule you will fail to adhere to your own program plan. Typically a workout session starts out with least 15 minutes of exercise per day alternating between 2 or 3 exercises per session. Every couple of weeks you should increase either the intensity of your workouts or the length of your workout sessions. Third Step: Knowing When To Increase Your Workout Session The best time to increase your workouts is when you are finding them to be easier then the day before. Fitness programs do not work unless you push yourself. A sure sign that your workout is becoming too easy is if you find yourself worrying more about other things than the workout. If you are working hard you will not be able to think about anything else because you are pushing yourself for the best results possible. Should You Hire A Personal Trainer? Only hire a personal trainer if you have no self-motivation. A lot of people would workout only if they have someone plan a fitness program for them and push them by getting on their back everyday and making them do the workouts. The biggest draw back in hiring a personal trainer is the cost. Many of them can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars a week just to keep you fit. I say if you have the money go for it, it’s easier, less to think of, and more motivating.

Finding Out How Bally’s Fitness Can Improve Your Life

Posted under fitness centers by Vivienne on Wednesday 7 May 2008

Many of us have great intentions when it comes to exercise, but delivering on our promises to ourselves can be a lot harder than we at first think. Going it alone makes it even harder to keep going towards our goals.

Sometimes it can be really beneficial to have a helping hand on the long road towards achieving peak fitness, and that’s where Bally’s fitness comes in.

What – Or Who – Is Bally’s Fitness?

Bally’s fitness is a chain of health clubs which offers a wide range of services and opportunities to help people to work towards their weight loss and exercise goals. Wherever you may be on the road towards your ideal body, Bally’s fitness will guide you along the route.

Is It Just Another Gym?

No, definitely not. Bally’s fitness does offer the kind of equipment you would find in the average gym, and you can certainly lift weights if that’s what you want to do, but there really is something for everyone here.

Gyms often give the impression of being packed with well toned men, and if you’re a woman it can sometimes be a little intimidating. Bally’s fitness aims to conquer this by offering classes in other areas, such as yoga and Pilates.

Another big advantage of Bally’s fitness is that they allow you to create the membership that is right for you. Different people can have very different requirements when it comes to exercise and what they want from a health center, and this is dealt with at Bally.

Will My Membership Fit Around My Existing Commitments?

This is perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions by anyone who is thinking of joining any kind of gym or health center. The advantage offered by Bally is that they offer shorter classes than many gyms. Many classes are an hour long, making it impossible to fit one into your lunch hour. But at Bally you can enjoy a class which is run in half the time.

Bally’s fitness offers superb benefits for many people, regardless of their lifestyle or outlook on life. They understand that getting to the gym can be difficult, hard to fit in, and even intimidating for some people. Fortunately they do all they can to make their health centers as accessible as possible for the widest range of people.

The first step has to be yours, but taking a step in the direction of Bally’s fitness can be the best decision you ever make.

Dieting for Success Making it Happen

Posted under Diets by Vivienne on Sunday 4 May 2008

Dieting is far too often approached from the mindset of impending failure. Too many people have tried and failed so many diets in their past that they try the next new diet with the absolute knowledge that they will fail in this attempt as well. Guess what? They will.

Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can or think you can’t you will always be right.” If you think you are going to fail at this diet you are dooming yourself to failure before you even deprive yourself of the first bite. Think about that before you begin because only a true masochist could find pleasure in perpetuating this vicious cycle without ever stopping to wonder why none of the other diets have worked for you. Henry Ford also said, “Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently”. In case you were wondering I would say his words are quite profound. Seriously though, if you do not examine the reasons for your failures you are certainly dooming yourself to repeat them and if you are already planning to fail why on earth would you even try?

You are the only person who can take control of your need to eat. You are the only one who can pay attention and notice when you are eating for emotional fulfillment and when you are eating from necessity. You and you alone can get yourself out of your chair and on your feet. You are the only one that can take the responsibility for the condition in which you find yourself. There are medical exceptions but even in these situations if you are trying diet after diet and failing over and over again then you must at some point in time realize that it is quite likely not the diets that aren’t working.

We must all be accountable for our successes and failures in life. It is no different when it comes to dieting. There are few better feelings in the world than for someone to notice and compliment your efforts. If you are very obese unfortunately, it may take a little more time for people to actually notice the weight you’ve lost. Too many men and women give up simply because no one noticed and that is an incredible shame. Give your dieting practices an opportunity to work before you decide they are a failure and you just might surprise yourself with a roaring success.

The truth is far too few people hold themselves accountable to their dieting and weight loss goals. This means that far too many people are giving up without really ever bothering to give it an effort. If you have an issue holding yourself accountable to your dieting plans, perhaps you would do well to diet with a partner. This helps you not only set goals but also to meet and exceed challenges along the way. A partner can also benefit from the partnership as he or she will be challenged and feel the need to perform better than if he or she were dieting alone.

You must hold yourself accountable to your stated dieting and weight loss goals in order to achieve any lasting results. If you have not had dieting success in the past, then perhaps it is time to bring some degree of accountability into the picture and make it happen.

Creating a home gym

Posted under fitness by Vivienne on Friday 2 May 2008

Having a home gym is the dream of many fitness enthusiasts.  There are benefits to going to a public gym - big variety of equipment, group classes, social atmosphere etc, but being able to train at home is really helpful if you are pressed for time, if you live in an area with long winters (who wants to head outdoors when it’s freezing!) or if you just prefer to listen to your own music and watch your own choice in DVD’s.  You don’t need a lot of room or a a lot of fitness equipment to set up a basic home gym.  Definitely get a treadmill so you can fit in your cardio no matter what the weather outside is like.  The York T-780 treadmill folds up when not in use and I think it’s ideal for home gyms. If you have a room you can dedicate, that’s great, but you can also set it up in a living room or spare bedroom if you need to. Set up treadmills where you can see a tv because you’ll want something to help pass the time. I really enjoy watching movies or my favourite sitcoms while I’m on the treadmill – it makes the time fly.

I like to do incline intervals on the treadmill while holding hand weights for extra resistance, but you can also use them to do upper body exercises while you walk, such as bicep curls, chest presses and shoulder raises. The more muscle group you engage the more calories you burn during and after your work out.

If you really home some room, boxing equipment is a great addition to your home gym. Nautilus machines and the like are great if you have the room, but the average Joe or Joanne will get great results with a combination of cardio and dumbbells.

Invest in some hand held weights or dumbbells in different weights.  I like the colourful plastic coated ones.  You can buy them as you need them or you can buy a set that comes with a storage frame.  Don’t be afraid to use some heavier ones – you’ll get used to them more quickly than you imagine. Using your weights just 2-3 days a week will see big gains in your strength and fitness.

Make sure you have some clear floor space for lower body work. You need to make sure you have room to lunge, to do sit ups and to stretch. Hooks on the wall to hold a barbell is a good idea if you can do it.

Fitness For The Female Body

Posted under fitness by Vivienne on Friday 2 May 2008

The images we see in the media still depict extremely thin and sometimes surgically altered women. But most women know that these images are not realistic, not really attractive and most of all not healthy. Women today know that balancing a career and family require a strong mind and body.

Female Only Fitness Centers

Female fitness centers have sprouted up all over the county and thrive as more and more women are looking for ways to stay in shape and still remain on schedule. Some women prefer to join a gym that caters exclusively to women.  Each woman’s workout is personal and not having to worry about how you look can make it easier to challenge yourself with new experiences. The instruction available at these centers regarding exercise and nutrition are designed specifically for women.

Some female fitness centers offer everything any gym would have such as weight training equipment, aerobic exercise machines, personal trainers, a variety of classes and babysitting services.  Other centers offer only circuit training, which is a great way to get in shape quickly.

The Home Gym For Women

Female fitness at home is also easier than ever.  Equipment can be purchased from many different retailers at prices to fit every budget.  A treadmill or stationary bicycle are great aerobic trainers, but if you like the outdoors and live in a place with mild weather you may want to run or jog around your neighborhood.

Strength training is also important so lifting light weights might be something you are interested in.  Enrolling in yoga or palates classes is another option to increase balance and strength for any female desiring a complete fitness program.

Female Fitness Includes Nutrition

A fit body needs superior nutrition and the busier you are the more important it is to stay fit.  Of course it is hard to find the time to prepare every meal everyday and everyone knows that prepackaged foods contain ingredients that can undermine any female’s fitness goals.

The key is to simplify your meals.  Eat more raw fruits and vegetables, eat sandwiches on low fat whole grain breads and prepare large slow cookers of beans and legumes to be used for multiple meals.  Eating smaller meals more often can cut your daily calorie intake while you feel full and satisfied all day.

If you have a family, teach good eating habits by example. Eating right is important for everyone and having your entire family help with meal preparations can install good habits also.
